What Do Bed Bugs Look Like?
Bed bugs come from eggs that are difficult to spot just with the naked eye. Only a little bit bigger than a single grain of salt, these eggs are typically deposited in nesting areas in batches of 10 or more.
Female bed bugs have the ability to lay multiple eggs on a daily basis, so infestation can indeed happen in a very short amount of time.
Young bed bugs, which are called nymphs, are light brown in color and translucent. At this stage, they already start hunting for hosts for food. Right after a blood meal, they turn bright red, and slowly fade to brown as the hours pass by. It takes them a few days to completely digest their food.
As adults, bed bugs develop into flat, wingless, oval-shaped, segmented insects that can grow up to 0.20 inches in length. They are usually reddish-brown in color and are better at enduring a wide range of environmental conditions.
How Bed Bugs Feed on Hosts
Known as hematophagous, or blood-sucking insects, bed bugs commonly prey on warm-blood creatures, usually human beings, for sustenance. They exclusively live on blood and can sense the perfect food source by the presence of particular chemicals, certain levels of carbon dioxide, and warmth.
With mouths that can pierce through skin, bed bugs inject their saliva into their host’s system, introducing anticoagulants that can trigger varying allergic reactions. In a lot of cases, their bites result to swelling and itching that may persist for weeks.
Thanks to legs that allow them to crawl both horizontally and vertically, and to their microscopic size, bed bugs can stealthily pay potential hosts a visit and feed on them while their guards are down. When it is dark and everyone is asleep, bed bugs can congregate around exposed skin, including legs, face, arms, neck, and hands, and enjoy a feast.
Where Bed Bugs Are Commonly Found
Bed bugs favor living in areas where they can easily get to their prey. In houses, they are commonly found on and around:
- Bed frames
- Carpets and rugs
- Sheets and linens
- Wall clocks
- Pillow and blankets
- Picture frames
Bed bugs are a serious matter that has to be dealt with as soon as possible, before things get out of hand. To help you correctly determine and effectively kill an infestation, contact Phoenix Bed Bug Expert today.
